What is Auslan?
Auslan is an acronym for AUstralian Sign LANguage.
Australian Sign Language is:
- …a formally recognised language in
Australia's National Language Policy of 1987.
- …multidimensional language incorporating
handshapes, facial and body movements, fingerspelling
and use of space.
…
- has its roots in English, Scottish,
and to a lesser extent Irish Sign languages. It is different from American and French Sign Languages.
Auslan Courses are offered so that
people who are hearing are:
- able to communicate with
friends and community members who are Deaf.
- able to learn a fun new language
- learn the basics
of how to use the elements of Auslan successfully
When? Where? How Much
We have decided to suspend our Auslan Courses until further notice.
Deaf Services Queensland offer Auslan courses in Townsville.
The tutor is Justine McEwin and we can highly recommend her classes.
These Auslan courses
do NOT
make the student qualify as an interpreter!
